NEW! Added views of Plum Grove at Kitano Tenmangu

NEW! 北野天満宮の梅の風景を追加

Kitano Tenmangu is the head shrine of all Tenmangu shrines across Japan, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning. Founded in 947, its grand main hall from the Momoyama period and numerous auxiliary shrines scattered throughout the grounds speak to its long and rich history. Affectionately known as “Tenjin-san” or “Kitano-san,” the shrine is a popular destination for students praying for academic success, as well as many other visitors throughout the year.

Within the shrine grounds, approximately 1,500 plum trees have been planted, including the legendary “Tobi-Ume” (Flying Plum)—a tree that, according to legend, flew overnight to Dazaifu to be with Michizane. One of the most captivating sights is the “Hana no Niwa” (Flower Garden), a plum orchard featuring a variety of plum blossoms. Enjoy the sight of white and red plum blossoms blooming under the gentle sunlight, and experience the subtle arrival of an early spring.
