Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is the head shrine of all Tenmangu shrines in Japan, dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the deity of learning. Founded in 947, its history can be seen in the ornate Momoyama-period main hall and the many smaller shrines throughout the grounds. In honor of Michizane’s love of plum blossoms, about 1,500 plum trees grow here, blooming in red and white from late February to herald the arrival of spring in Kyoto.

During the season, the plum garden “Hana no Niwa” opens to visitors. You can stroll among a wide variety of plum trees or enjoy a full 360-degree view from the observation deck. Take in the delicate blossoms set against shrine buildings over 400 years old, and feel the gentle air of early spring.
